How NOT to LOSE Programs when UPGRADING

Don't make the mistake that I made if you want to keep all your
programs and data when you upgrade to WinXP. MS does not make it
clear in their instructions. They just tell you to start your computer
and insert the CD. So that's what I did, I IMMEDIATELY inserted the
upgrade disk BEFORE my current Windows screen loaded. That's what you
should do for a CLEAN install, which will wipe out everything on your
C: drive. (It will not wipe out any other virtual drives, so if you
partitioned your hard drive, migrate your important data to D: or
whatever letter you named it. )

This is what you should do to save your programs and data:
Start your computer and WAIT for your current operation system to load,
such as Win98 or WinMe. THEN, insert the CD. The CD will autostart
and it will give you the options for an upgrade or a clean install.
Choose the UPGRADE option if you don't want to lose any programs or
data.

Hope this helps someone!

One more thing - If you want to make a DUAL-BOOT system, then you
should immediately insert you WinXP Upgrade CD and not wait to insert
it after the current OS has finished loading. When you choose the last
option, to keep file systems intact, it will create a dual boot system,
allowing you to get into WinXP or Win98 (or WinMe). However, WinXP
will not have any of the programs that Win98 has.

Two things:

you should change your posting to not post your true e-mail address, as now
you will get swamped with spam, and usually it's best to respond to someones
question rather than posting a general tip, and please do a search before you
post , as this info is widely available for all on the internet if you just
do a search for it.

That's good advice. Just to add: if a person wants to get into upgrading
Windows installations or just generally doing OS installation work, they
should read up first. There's lots of stuff online. Some search terms you
might use to get started:

install windows xp
diskpart
fdisk
partition
format
upgrade to windows xp
