Hi
I have freed up a partition on on my hard disk. Aside
from the OS what data can I safely move to this
partition? Can one move the "Documents and Settings"
folders? Thanks.

Hi,

You can move any data folders, including the "My Documents" for each user.
You cannot move already installed software (uninstall it, then reinstall it
to the new partition instead), nor can you move the "Documents and Settings"
folder that houses all your user profile (this is a system folder and is not
movable).

The general rule is that user-created data can be moved. For example WORD
documents, EXCEL spreadsheets, JPGs, MP3s, etc.

Never try to move the operating system or any installed programs by a simple
cut&paste. It won't work, and might crash the PC. However, you can
uninstall and reinstall programs to a new location.

Do not move the Documents and Settings folder. However, feel free to move
user documents that are this folder, usually in the MyDocuments sub-folder.
In fact, on a home PC, I would recommned that you never store documents in
MyDocuments. Access to this fold is tied to the user acount. If the user
ID ever gets corrupted, you may lose access to the documents. if you want
security, get XP Pro and make an encrypted folder.

You can "move" the swap file and the hibernation file, but not via
cut&paste. Use the tools provided with XP to define where these files
reside, reboot, and it will create them at the new location.

You can change the location of the local storage for outlook express via its
tools/options. Do not try a cut&paste.

You can change the location of the IE temporary internet file from its
options.
