How much can Outlook handle?

my boss insists on keeping 10,000+ emails around (just
from the past 2 years) and I can't figure out any other
reason than pure volume why Outlook keeps crapping out
everytime I export/archive to a .pst.

I'm even doing selective backups and only backing up
recent stuff (as opposed to ALL of it everytime), but
everytime I do this, Outlook freezes up the next 20 or so
times I open it. I usually fool around and delete
something somehow and then it somehow works again, but
this is getting frustrating.

Am I wrong in blaming the volume?

What version of Outlook? (and yes, there are limits on personal folder
storage)

For Outlook 2000 and 2002 the limit is 2gb for any PST file. Don't push the
envelope or you will lose data because you will have to use a trucation tool
to chop off data until Outlook is capable of reading the file again. Simply
create a new PST and make it the new delivery point and then move some of
the important data from the old PST still open in the folder list to the new
PST you have made the delivery point. If you are using a version newer then
2002 the limit is higher then 2 gb for a PST.
