When you purchase XP Professional how many computers in
your home/office can it be installed on, also once
registered/activated, if that machine were to have a
motherboard failure and a new board was put in to replace
it not necessarily the same board would i have to buy a
new copy of XP?

Thanks

Your retail copy of XP comes with 1 license. You may install it on one
machine. If you have to reinstall, you will have to reactivate it. This
may be done over the Internet, or if you've changed a significant amount of
hardware, over the phone. The process is pretty painless.

It come with one shrinkwrap license, whether the shrinkwrap license is
binding software license is still legally up for debate.

In the event of a motherboard replacement you would almost certainly
have to do a Repair Install. This will preserve the installed
applications, user data files, and program configuration settings.
Windows updates would have to all be reinstalled.

See http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for information
on how to do a repair install.

Good luck

Tony,

There would be no need to purchase another license for this scenario.
Depending on the changes in the hardware, you may or may not have to
reactivate after a motherboard replacement or an associated reinstall.

If it is a retail, boxed copy you can uninstall it from one machine to
transfer on to another. You then activate afresh on that - if more than
120 days on it will go through on the net, otherwise you have to phone
in. And you can make substantial changes to hardware before the system
at boot thinks 'This ain 't Kansas any more' and asks for that phone
re-activation.

A copy sold cheaper as an 'OEM' one, 'for supply with a new machine' is
only licensed however to the machine where first installed, and may not
be transferred
