How many directory levels are too many?

I had a problem trying to burn a DVD, using two different SW packages.

Roxio said that it couldn't find the file(s) when it tried to validate the
setup, just before the burn.

Burning Studio 5 said that it too couldn't find the file(s) when it tried to
validate the setup, just before the burn.

Here's an example of the path in question (from the Burning Studio log):

8:53:41 AM: An error occured while accessing a file.
8:53:41 AM: D:\Downloads\Microsoft0\Operating Systems\Windows 2000\Windows 2000
- Server\Migration\Windows 2000 - Server Domain Migration Cookbook\00 - Windows
2000 Server Domain Migration Cookbook
Introduction_files\ADSAdClient31_files\0000053432_000000000000000170282.gif
8:53:41 AM: The system cannot find the path specified.

Using Windows Explorer, I see that this particular file is 15k in size. When I
try to open it, with any of several graphics packages, none can open the file.
The error msgs seem to vary somewhat, from an incomplete path with no real error
mentioned, to bad/invalid header.

I should also mention that either on my PC, or on the DVD I burned, the saved
webpage seems to open just fine.

So let's review...

IE let me save it, and didn't report any errors. WE let's me look at what I
saved, and everything *appears* normal. (I'm using XP, sp2.)

Can anyone please tell me what *this* problem [really] is? Have I used too many
levels? What's the limit? Why would IE let me save something that included too
many levels?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

It's no question of directory levels but the overall path
lenght which is limited to 255. Yours is longer and cannot
work.

I suggest some directory renamings :-)
Microsoft -> MS
Operating Systems -> OS
Windows 2000 -> W2K
Server Domain Migration Cookbook -> SDMC

Maybe you have to adjust the pathes in the registry. Then
a search & replace tool is helpful:

Ahhhhhhh so.........

That explains a lot... That also explains the problem I had last month when
trying to save some web pages from MS's website. For the first time ever, I saw
an error msg that said the path was "invalid". (Most were okay when I shortened
the name for the individual page. MS makes so many of their webpage names
sooooo long!)

Thanks a lot.
