We want to set up a backup server for our mobile users using NovaNet-WEB
from NovaStor to backup documents from th eusers over the internet. All
users have fast links etc. etc.

I want to know how many CALs I need when I use the following configuration:
- Windows 2003 Server Standard
- Windows installed as a member server (we want it seperated from all the
other servers)
- Only Administrator account for local use
- Guest account enabled but renamed

Do build-in accounts like Administrator and Guest need CALs? (the former yes
I think, the latter no). Please advice....

I feel like you got confused about User CAL. User CAL not
at all related to user account. User Cal deal with how
many people (human being working on computer) are in your
company

Please read below link carefully
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/sam/lic_cal_win2003_ser
ver.mspx

If u are in US or CANADA Please call 1 800 426 9400 and
know more about the licensing

Please read about the CAL
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/sam/lic_cal.mspx#perseat

In a company if 5 users (people) are using the sane user account (for e.g.
user account name salesteam) then u need 5 USER CAL

In a company if 5 users ( People ) are using the 10 user account then only
5 USER CAL is sufficient

So, if I got it right, only the Administrator needs a user CAL since this is
the only account that uses/accesses the computer. NovaStor uses the guest
account for accessing the storage folder on the harddisk.

The application uses 1 account (which can even be the guest or local system
account). The users need only licenses for the backup software because the
application stores all information as one user. It's the backup software
that's connected to, not the fileserver.

I don't think it's fair to say that every user that requests data from or
stores data to an application (third party) needs a Windows CAL. This would
implement that all webpage visitors also need a CAL or third party
databaseserver users need a CAL. I would even think that's legally
incorrect.

You need CALs for the Computers not the Users.
How many different computers will access the system? That is how many CALS
you need.

I installed Windows XP Home on the server, configured the storage system as
a NAS using an extra add-on board. Now I don't need any licenses other then
the Windows XP Home. Performance is equal.

Now tell me why I need Windows Server anyway for storage solutions???

if you r using XP home editon no need of CAL....

CAL IS only for server.

If u want to call for more information try this number US&CANADA 1800 426
