"Mainstream support will end two years after the next version of
this product is released. Extended support will end five years after
mainstream support ends."

This is somewhat confusing to me. Can I surmise that security fixes for XP
will last until 2014? (7 years after 1/2007)

Never assume anything as the old "Subject to change" rule is always there.

True, can't be sure of anything with MS.
However, as it now stands, will security fixes for XP last until 2014? (7
years after 1/2007)

Can you still get security fixes for Windows ME, if so then the answer is
yes (I've never used ME so I don't have the answer) since ME is about 7
years old and was replaced by XP in late 2001.

More than likely the determining factor will be how quickly Vista is adopted
the IT community, if they migrate faster than they have in the past then the
support for XP might be shortened.

Or, MS shortens it to speed up the change to Vista.

I have never known MS to shorten the time. I have seen them lengthen the
time as they did for Win98. I like to think MVPs had a hand in that since
we pointed out that there were a lot of Win98 installations on machines that
could not handle WinXP.
