downloading Acronis Disk Dir. suite 10.0 to partition 18G laptop. Wondering
how big to make the C:\ I read somewhere that 4G is enough for the OS? and 5
for applications and programs and remainder unallocated for data and pics,
etc. The opinions of the experts are all over the board but they talk about
150 to 250G drives. I'm just interested in my l'il 18G right now.

My personal Data and pics don't amount to anything. I doubt I'll ever have
more than 2 or 3Gb counting my solitaire and ma jongg and everything. would
appreciate any suggestions as to size of partitions.

I also have an external HDD of 60G (gift, don't know what I'm gonna do with
it) and plan to play with it next if I don't blow this one up.

10 . . 15 GBytes seems adequate in most cases for WinXP
and for applications. I use 3 GBytes for my Win2000
installation and 4 GBytes for WinXP Professional, hence
10 GBytes would give me plenty of spare space.

First, I'm not conversant or familiar with Acronis. One question would be, if later on, Acronis has an option to safely resize a partition.
That would be great to have in case you needed it.

If you have an existing XP system, take a look at it. See how much space your o.s. takes up in that system.
Make your windows o.s. partition as big as necessary, plus allow around 2-3 GB of free space. (The next time a service pack update is released, you'll be glad you saved that space allocation).
I would guess near 8 to 10 GB would be good for o.s., and remainder for data & user apps.

Since most default program installations default to the C drive, most users will have all their programs on the C drive.
Judicious use of the "custom" setup (install) option, when adding new programs, will allow you to direct new programs to a different drive.
Thus continuing to conserve space on C.

According to the Spec. Requirements for XP Home/Pro, only 1.5Gb is required.
I take this to mean the OS and all Apps/Programs that come with it? Acronis
Disk Suite 10.0 is *supposed* to be able to shrink, stretch, create, delete,
swap and juggle partitions with the greatest of ease (according to the ad)
and all for only 50 bucks.

I was thinking of making C:\ 4G and another partition behind it 4G for back
up and remainder unallocated. Maybe I better revise my figures.

4 GBytes for WinXP is too tight. I consider 10 GBytes a
good figure unless you plan to load a large number of
applications.

Acronis Disk Suite can indeed do all these things with
the greatest of ease.

1.5 gb for Windows and only Windows.
Minimal install with no other Windows options installed.
Also there is no room for any updates, Service Packs etc.
5 is more like the absolute minimum with 10 gb better, that is for Windows
XP, updates etc but nothing else..
Then add the space programs use as well a other data you will keep on the
same drive and increase your minimum from there..
