How is this possible?

I use Outlook 2000 for email and Outlook Express for my newsgroup reader.
When I reply to a newsgroup post or post a new subject the OE6 email window
pops up and after sending the post shows up the sent items folder in OE6
rather than Outlook. If I forward a newsgroup post the Outlook email
program comes up and all goes as it should. Now the really weird part. In
OE6 it says that it is not the default mail program (as it should read), and
in OE6 under TOOLS/ACCOUNT/MAIL there is NO mail account at all (so how can
OE6 send a reply???). The only change in the system recently was that I
installed a Windows update yesterday. Could that have something to do with
the problem?

Not sure I follow your question properly Bob.

When you reply to a newsgroup the account used will be under
tools>accounts>news, not under >mail.

When you forward the system will try to use whatever is selected as the
default mail program, and that sounds like what it's doing. That would end
up in the sent items folder of whatever program gets used.
