I assume it is a little lame, compared to some of the commercial
products. My assumption, not based on any fact.

Anyone point to good analysis of Windows anti-virus and system
protection, compared to various other products??

Thanks,
Alan Moorman

Windows comes with no built in AV protection and a limited firewall. You
will need to use a third part AV product for protection.

Er... WinXP has absolutely *NO* antivirus capabilities, of any kind.

Any chance you're talking about the AV included as part of Windows Live
One-Care?

Personally, I've been using the entire WLOC Suite for about 4 months
now and it more than meets my needs with a minimum of hassle and
problems. It's certainly a vast improvement over the Norton SystemWorks
I had been using.

There's nothing to compare, since Windows comes with no such protection at
all.

There is no Windows AV product.

I hate to put in a plug for Norton System Works, or any
Symantec product since with their paranoia and activation
protection, they are so impossible to deal with,
but I've used their NSW as my only on-board Anti-Virus
software for at least five years, and it has never let
a worm or virus of any kind into my systems.

I have been using Avast! anti-virus software for a few months and find
it to be an excellent product, and IT"S FREE. Check it out for
yourself. When used in conjunction with spy bot, adaware and windows
defender, you should never have a problem with viruses, worms, trojans,
etc. But you have to be faithful about running scans and keeping these
tools up to date.

As others have pointed out, Windows XP (Home Ed. and Pro) does not ship
with an AV product.

For those who are interested, the September 2006 issue of Consumer
Reports has a very good article on computer virus, adware, malware and
phishing. They also tested and reviewed some of the main players in
anti-virus, firewall, and anti-adware applications. You don't need to
be a subsriber to get most of this information at:

NOTE that the above website will NOT give you the report WITHOUT
paying for a subscription.

Also, a very good Forum for Windows Security concerns is
http://www.wilderssecurity.com

MANY experts post there, so you will usually get very good
information.

I personally use Eset's NOD32 Antivirus, and believe it to be the best
AV solution around (and I am certainly not alone in that assessment).
I also try my BEST to stay away from Symantec products.

NOD32 is seldom mentioned by the various sites like Consumer Reports.
Eset doesn't advertise heavily, sadly.

Get it here: http://www.nod32.com

Soon, they will be releasing an all-in-one solution. If it's as great
as their stand-alone AV package, it will be absolutely great.

OOps! Sorry about the Consumer Reports mess-up. The magazine is
available at most public library periodical sections. While it involves
going out and doing something away from one's computer and the
internet. Public Library magazines are still free to read on the
premises, and check-out at most libraries.

Eset's NOD32, never heard of that one before. I will have to check it out.
