"alt" is a category leading-name in Usenet.
alt.somename
alt.somename.somename
the somename are limitless.

This NG is in the category "microsoft"
and the subcategories below that ".public.word.docmanagement"

In any NG the inquires and/or discussions should be related to that
category.

How do you believe that ALT is related to
microsoft.public.word.docmanagement?

SBC likely offers somewhere in the neighborhood of 35,000 Newsgroups for
participation.
Each NG will have their own FAQ's or accepted procedures. Visitors should
learn those procedures prior to any participation.

Usenet and or NG's existed in a similar format prior to the boom of the
internet.
This service was referred to as BBS.
Rather than dialing in to your internet provider for a connection you dialed
into a BBS. Radio Shack had such BBS along with many other BBS providers as
well as many universities.
