Hello,

How does one set the default template for new documents?

Many thanks for any help.

The default template for a new document created using the New button on the
toolbar is always going to be Normal.dot. You can change the functionality
of the button to instead open the New dialog, allowing you to choose a
different template. You could even write or record a macro to open a new
document based on a specific template and then assign that macro to a
toolbar button using the New button icon (if you name the macro
FileNewDefault, it will even replace the built-in command and be assigned to
the New button automatically, but I don't know that I'd advise this).

Also, you can modify the shortcut used to start Word so that it opens with a
document based on a different template (see “WD: Word Startup (Command-Line)
Switches and Their Purpose†at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=210565),
but this affects only the initial document; using the New button after that
will still create a document based on Normal.dot.
