Hi. I've had a recurring problem: namely reading WORD documents I
created in previous versions, mostly Windows 95. How does one read
these old documents in XP? Why doesn't Microsoft protect old documents
for new software? Yes, I can open these documents in WordPad and plain
text files without formats; but it would be useful to access them in
format versions. Does that mean I have to download Windows 95? And
what about WORKS? When I got XP I lost that and all my WORKS documents
cannot open. Is there some way to download WORKS or some other way to
open a WORKS file (many co-workers don't even know what I'm talking
about when I refer to WORKS!). Thanks for assistance.

You created the document using Microsoft WORD, a separate add-on program.
Why would you think that, without installing Microsoft WORD on your new
computer, you can view the document correctly.

Buy Microsoft Word, Works w/Word or one of the many flavors of Microsoft
Office.

If you wish to open documents created in either Microsoft Works or Word,
then you'll have to purchase and install Microsoft Works or Word. Neither
program is included with the Windows XP operating system.

Thanks. The point is, I *have* Word ('97). I lose track of which files
were created in which
program. I once had *Works* but now no longer; yet once I was able to
open a *Works* file in
*Word* with a special drop-down option, which I forget. For whatever
reason, I cannot open
formatted versions of files previously created either in *Word 95* or
*Word97*. Files open, but
not formatted.

Google "works in word". For a start:
