How do you select/highlight vertically

i HAVE LONG COLUMNS OF BIRTHDAYS: 00/00/0000. How do I highlight
vertically? (Just the year, for example..)
 
Hold down the Alt key and then starting at the top left, hold down the left
mouse key and drag to the right as far as required and down.
