how do you restore outlook express messages from windows backup utilitiy

If you cannot find any dbx extensions in your backup file then
it is likely that you did not back up your .dbx files.
 
I am backing up everything on my c drive to the windows backup utility, what
would the filename for
the message(s) files I would be looking for inside of the windows backup
utilitity.

This is really a question for an Outlook Express group, which is
where you will find the best OE experts. I would expect to see
a set of folders like these:
Calendar.dbx
Deleted Items.dbx
Drafts.dbx
Folders.dbx
Inbox.dbx
Outbox.dbx
Sent Items.dbx

Note that a dependable backup process must include the following steps:
1. Create the backup procedure.
2. Perform a full restoration.
3. Test the restored data.
4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 twice each year.
5. If this is an automated process, send yourself a copy of the
backup report once every week.

Many people limit themselves to Step 1.
