Some how my entire XP system (win98 upgraded to XP) had switched back to
classic view, and I cannot switch it back.

Any Thoughts?

What, where, what's category view. Are you talking about Windows Explorer.
Go to any folder, set the view as desired, go to Tools, select folder
options, go to the View tab, click "Apply to All Folders" and click apply
and ok if the Apply button becomes active.

Sorry if this isn't the answer to your question but I could only make
assumptions based on the information you gave.

Start with Display> Themes and select the Windows XP Theme.

In Folder Options> General elect to use the common tasks pane.

Control Panel is the only place that I know of that uses the word
"Categories." Once the common tasks pane is enabled, you can click a link
in that area of a control panel window to toggle between Category and
Classic view.

Windows Explorer has a feature that's useful at times: View> Arrange Icons>
Show in Groups. This groups items in Windows Explorer and My Computer
into similar categories.
