Try:-

Now goto Tools>Folder Options>View>Select Show hidden files and
folders>Uncheck Hide extensions for Known file types>ok/apply.

Locate the SR.INF file.Right click on it and select install.

Reinstalling System Restore:

IMPORTANT: The following procedure will remove all the existing System
Restore points, and resets the System Restore drive monitoring options to
defaults (monitors all drives by default.)

1. Click Start, Run and type %Windir%\INF
2. Locate the SR.INF file. (The file may be shown as SR, if you have
configured Windows Explorer to hide known file extensions.)
3. Right-click the SR.INF file, and then click Install
Windows will now attempt to reinstall System Restore, and may prompt you for
the Windows installation source path. Point to %Windir%\ServicePackFiles
folder, or insert your slipstreamed Windows XP (matching the Service Pack
level of your system.)

Ramesh,

I am facing the same SR problem here. Assuming that my SR files are
corrupt, I want to reinstall System Restore. RE: your instruction to locate
SR.INF and Install, I am confused. Is this file on my hard drive but
uncorrupted? Or when I continue to follow your instruction and insert my XP
CDROM will I find new, uncorrupted files there?

Also, can I avoid the whole slipstreaming process by just uninstalling SP2,
doing the System Restore reinstall as you suggest and then reinstall SP2?

Thanks for you help!

Jim,

SR.INF is just an information file that contains the installation
instructions. The actual files are in the CD, (or in
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder if you've applied a Service Pack.)

It's not mandatory to use a slipstream CD, but you need to point to a valid
location that contains the latest version of source files. This is usually
C:]Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386.

I believe I have 'fixed' System Restore. I created a new restore point and
used Disk Cleanup in System Tools to erase previous points. Since then, I
have done some SpyBot scans which create new points but I am still able to
restore back to the point I created.
