how do you manage extra/loose computer and AV cables?

I've never found a good way to manage cables, generally I tape them
with masking tape or something. So about once a year I have a hideous
mess of tangles cables...would cable ties be better? Does anyone make a
cable management system, same idead as the ones for cables that're
plugged in?

Ikea do a sort of split duct thing. It's about 20mm diameter corrugated
plastic tube about 2m long. One side of the tube is cut so you can feed
cables into it.

I've been using these for a while, but having just looked at the back of my
recently rebuilt PC, there's still a rats nest there!

A wire loom holds the cables in a bundle yet allows exit/entry along the
side. Most are corrugated tubing split down one side, but they also have
coiled wraps that you roll around the bundle.

color coded velcro straps.

Too expensive.

I use scraps of 12Ga insulated electrical wire, generally cut into 6
inch lengths. The last through dozens of re-wraps and are stiff enough
that you don't have to twist them up tight.

My main desk is a 10 ft slab of wood on file cabinets and I have
eye-screws under the bench along the rear, 6 inches appart with loops
of 12Ga wire through each. I can run any and all the wire i need
thrugh those loops. There is no wire on the floor or even visible.

If you mean computer cables that are not in use, I have found that putting
them in ziplock sandwich bags works great. They never get tangled up, andyou
can easily see the contents. Works great with other stuff as well.
I've been collecting computer junk since 1982, and rarely throw out anything
that might come in handy. :-)

I use foam pipe insulation.
