how do you get rid of seeing files with the ~ symbol? I didn't used to see
these but suddenly they started appearing and there's nothing in them.

As I understand it those files are temporary files that word create under
normal operation. But if word is not closed the proper way they might still
be left.

I usually delete them if they are there after I have exited all word. They
can also be backups so word can restore your document if it crashes.

It is normal behavior for Word to create these temporary files. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 "Description of how Word
creates temporary files" for more information. You can stop Windows
from displaying the temporary files by starting Windows Explorer or My
Computer and clicking on Tools | Folder Options | View tab | select the
"Do not show hidden files and folders" radio button | OK.
