When I was running Win 98 2nd Ed, I use to be able to go into DOS and use the
extract command to search all the cabinets, find the file I was looking for
then overwrite it, Had to list File , Source and where it was going then okay
it and it did it. What is the protocols to do this with Win XP ?, I have
reviewed expand and rename, MAP , ect, however SP1 on the operating system
disk is not the same as SP2, many of the files are different size, Has anyone
expanded the service pack\i386 on the sp2 Disk in the console and overwritten
core files yet ? If so whaere is the ibfo to do this? I 'll check back from
time to time about this post.

If you open up a command prompt you can still use extract command to do
this.
As for SP1 / SP2 files being of different size, you might want to consider
to get out your original XP CD and incorporate (slipstream) SP2 into it.
Here are some references of how to do that.

Furthermore, if you are concerned that your system files might not all be
'up to specs', consider checking them using the command:

sfc /scannow

This will check them all and, if needed, get the original of off the CD and
put it back onto your system
This requires your CD to be at the same level as your current system, so if
the system is SP1, the CD needs to be SP1 (slipstreamed).
Same thing applies to SP2.

Thanks for the response, I have SP2 in already: it goes like this, however
there is something I'm missing:
1, Op system Disk with SP 1 in CD-ROM 1
2. SP2 Disk in CD-ROM-2
3. Type R to get into console
4. Type MAP to see the devices and numbers
5 Assuming SP2 is Mapped and E in drive CD-ROM 2
to copy SP2 files in and overwrite system files , its close to this:

EXPAND E:\SP2\ i386\Kernel32.dl_C:\windows\system 32\Kernel 32. dll
I'm missing something though:

SOL. System File Checker works way different in XP. Windows File
Protection takes over. If you were to try and delete calc.exe it will
reappear before you can say, "Bob's your Uncle."

Well, chitchat this, a$$hole. I *do* know the answer, but *I'm* too busy
to give to you.

Thanks for your responses, none of you know, I'll find the answer on a forum,
since no one here knows what they are doing.

Nor you, by the looks of it.

For obvious reasons files from SP2 will be different in size from their SP1
predecessors. (DUH)

As for 'going to DOS' to get a file back out of a CAB file is no longer
needed. What's more, depending on the filesystem in use it wouldn't normally
even be possible to write to the target disk.
(So much for the different protocols (?) in XP)

XP handles the OS files in a completely different manner, actually compared
to Win 98 it *handles* them instead of *not*.
Part of that handling is dare I say it?) a protocol called Windows File
Protection (as indicated by other posters), although it is not a protocol as
such but a feature of the OS.
It is automatic and ensures that any system files that get corrupted are
being put back instantly in their uncorrupted form and in their appropriate
location from a cached copy, so from that angle there is no need to go out
and 'extract' anything from a CAB.

Next there is the possibility (feature) where the user might want to check
the OS files to be the correct version and that can be done using System
File Checker, also already indicated by previous posts. This will work from
a single CD with all the relevant OS files on there, be it in cabinet files
or not. It doesn't handle 2 cd's with parts of the os spread accross them
(XP-SP1 on 1 and just SP2 on the other)
Stands to reason, because there is only 1 SourcePath, ie. the location the
OS is installed from.

So re-reading the previous posts might have given you a clue as to what to
do.
However it was very unfortunate that those posts did not spoon-feed you or
spell out the solution.
So you are right, we don't know what we're doing, but with you here, we're
in good company, don't you think?

Oh yeah, I concur with Phil!!!

Say 'Hi' on the forum for us.

How's the weather in your area.

Lots of rain and crap falling out here on the wet coast.

How 'bout those Red Sox? Think they can pull it off?

Guess that's enough chit-chat for now.

Will check back from time to time to see how you're getting on with your
social skills.

Cheers, Gord

You can open a window on the CD's i386 folder and use the ordinary
Search - files are not in .cab libraries. Note that the versions there
will have last character of extension changed to _ - some.dl_ You can
then r-click and expand, or use Expand Files in a run of MSConfig.exe

Alex,

\I386 | Right click some.dl_ does not reveal an Expand choice. Is this
option removed if one has WinZip installed. Or if cabview.dll &
zipfldr.dll are unregistered?

To answer part of my question, I re-registered cabview.dll & zipfldr.dll
and rebooted. Still no Expand option. I'm not gonna bother to uninstall
WinZip to find out. ;-(
