I imported an 8MB avi file in to Windows Movie Maker, that I had recorded on my digital camera. Then saved it as a windows movie and it became a more manageable size.

However I can't play it using Windows Media Player, Quick Time or Real Player. THey all say it's an invalid format.

How would I send this file to other people to watch if they don't have Windows Movie Maker?

The file type ".mswmm" is the project file for MovieMaker. You have to
choose File, Save as Movie and that should create the finished movie file
(.wmv or .avi or something else).
