How do messages get marked as read when they were never opened?

I am the System Administrator for our company. We are running Small Bus
Server 2003 which includes Exchange Server 2003. I have 27 clients that
access email from the Exchange Server. Recently, one of my clients has been
noticing that new messages are being marked as read very soon after they are
delivered without him ever opening them. He does not have the reading pane
turned on. This appears to be random. Not all of his messages turn to read,
but some do. Any thoughts on why one person out of 27 is having this
problem? At first I thought someone had his password and was getting on his
computer after hours, so I made him change his password. That did not solve
the problem, so I have ruled that possibility out.

A rule, perhaps, with the "mark as read" action enabled?

Brian,
Thanks for responding. I checked his settings and he has no rules. I have
checked all of his settings and can't find anything that would cause this.

Try a new mail profile.

I did create a new Outlook folder within his profile and it is working so
far. Thanks for the suggestion.
