before i could right click and rename a file, and change
the extesion to change the file type. Example if i had
ABC.avi, i could change it to ABC.wmv but in win XP i
dont seem to be able to do this? how can i change the
file type?

thanks

The way you described, is exactly the way I do it, without any problems.
Maybe if you explained a bit more! Are you getting error messages. Is the
file "locked" because it is in use. Help us to help you!

Changing the extension does not change the file type. It only changes what
Windows thinks that file is. It would be similar to changing Charles' name
to Charlene. Changing the name did not make him become a girl. You should
open the file in the program that handles that type of extension. Now,
perhaps you can click on File... Save As... and click on the drop down box
for file type. If the extension you wish to use is there, choose it. Now
it will be changed to that type program and will have the extension you
desire.

check that the view extenstions option is not checked.
to do this
open any folder
select 'Tools' then 'Folder Options' then the 'View' tab.
then find the 'Hide extensions for know file types' its
after the 'hidden files and folders' options.
uncheck this option
then click OK
that should solve your problem.

The file type refers to the format the file is in. Changing the
file's extension just changes its name and does nothing to change
its format.

Regardless of operating system, changing the type requires a
program capable of converting the data from one format to
another.

You can change the file name via F2. That doesn't change the file
itself, just what will be used to try to open it.
