How do I write a book in Word - automatically add features, etc

I started putting down bits and pieces of my families history several years
ago and now want to move forward.

Is it built into Word that I can sort of automatically add table of
contents, index, etc. as I go or do I need to do this manually?

I was unable to find anything by using search.
