How do I view and edit pictures/graphics in the Print Layout view?

This is totally screwing up the updating of my textbook for Office 2003......

I need a full page view where I can see my graphics, edit and format
them......

The Reading Layout is too small [doesn't allow you to fill the screen with
one page] and I don't have access to all the formatting as with Office
2000....

Uggggh!! New is not always better.

Is there a solution????

Hi Berenice,

You can turn off the reading layout view on startup
in Tools=>Options in Word. The other views in Word
(except for the 'thumbnails' view are basically the
same in Word 2000 and 2003.

Select "Whole Page" in Print Layout view. Or if, by "full page" you mean
Full Screen, then select that option.

Thanks for your reply,

But I don't want to turn off the Reading Layout....

My whole textbook is about how to use Microsoft Office (Word, etc.) and I
can't expect my students to screw around with major software tweaks -
especially if even I can't find out where to change - &gt - in Tools as you
suggest.

I just want to use the Print Layout view as I have been and STILL be able to
see my graphics, edit them and do all the things that could be done in the
2000 and 98 versions.

All I can get now is a blank place-holder where a graphic is and yet it's
there when using Print Preview.

I need to be able to adapt my textbook to incorporate the "few" changes in
2003 so that all students using these versions of Office can use the textbook.

Hope there is a solution out there.

Thanks again
Berenice

There is no reason why you should not be able to see your graphics in Print
Layout view. Check http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/DrwGrphcs/InvisibleGraphics.htm
for some possibilities; also, if you're seeing field codes instead of
graphics, press Alt+F9.

FWIW, I don't consider a Tools | Options setting a "major software tweak";
one of the first things Word users should learn is how to customize Word to
look and work the way they want.

Thanks for the reply.

However, the whole idea of the textbook is for students to use Office (Word)
as it is installed on their computer.

If they can't see their graphics and work with them, it's a useless exercise.

Teaching them to change Options is not a problem, but not being able to work
with graphics in Page Layout is.

I'll check out the htm you suggested.

Thanks again,
Berenice

PS: Apparently I misread the previous suggestion to change the - &gt - in
Tools. From the looks of things, the - &gt - in this Discussion software
indicates a quote symbol and is not a command..... So much for tweaking the
software....

I'm not sure where you're seeing "&gt"; in Outlook Express I do not see any
such except in your posts. The suggestions offered so far are:

1. Disable Reading Layout view on the General tab of Tools | Options.

2. Set Print Layout view to display "Whole Page" or "Page Width."

3. Make sure you have "Drawings" checked and "Picture placeholders"
UNchecked on the View tab of Tools | Options.

All of these are very basic settings that your students should learn to use.

Wouldn't the whole idea of creating a textbook for students on Word be
to prepare them for anything they may encounter?

Obviously your default settings were modified unexpectedly since
normally you *do* see graphics in Page Layout view. If your students
encounter similar difficulties shouldn't they be educated enough to
know how to modify their personal preferences such as those found
under Tools/Options? Those aren't major tweaks, btw. A major tweak
would be manually editing the Registry. (And there are situations
where this is the only way to modify some settings.

One of the first things my students learn is Word can be modified to
suit your preferences. If something appears odd it's likely the issue
lies in their settings and they shouldn't blame the application.

Also I noted you referred to the 98 version of Word. Word versions for
Windows 95 and above are: 97, 2000, 2002, 2003. Word 98 was designed
for the Mac.

Obviously, you don't have to deal with 250 high school students screwing
around changing options and defaults all day and still be expected to have
time to teach them as much of the "Office" software as possible in the time
constraints of a semester - on top of all the testing required by the
district, state and federal requirements.

However, for your edifcation - I downloaded Office's update sp1 and now the
Tools-Options choices are working properly....

So much for manufacturer-installed software.

Thanks again for your help.

Don't know where the problems were, but I decided to download and install
Office's update SP1 and what ever the problems with the Tools-Option choices
were, they are working properly now.

So much for manufacturer-installed software.

Thanks again.

I deal, and have dealt, with all types of students and of all ages and
understand the situations you encounter.

To alleviate my frustration I implemented a few procedures to set the
applications back to the defaults. I also made it a point to get a
good grasp on all of the settings/options in the applications so when
something does get changed I can quickly recognize the problem.

If you would like to know more about how to reset the applications to
the defaults when necessary I'd be happy to help.

Something you may want to keep in mind is we've found numerous
situations in which a third party modifies your personal preferences.
Typically an add-in is responsible for the modifications but
occasionally I've found a few Microsoft templates that modify your
preferences as well. If Office came preinstalled then it could have
been caused by the image the manufacturer used to install Office. If
you continue to encounter graphics disappearing in Print Layout view
then you may need to investigate this further.

btw, since you are a teacher, I believe it's "edification" rather than
"edifcation". ;-)
