How do I upgrade to Outlook 2002 w/o losing all my contacts?

I have to upgrade from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2002 because of the software
that comes with my new phone/PDA. The software for the phone/PDA indicates
it will automatically upgrade for me, however, it will remove Outlook 2000
and install Outlook 2002. I am afraid I will lose all my contacts, folders
and emails. I assume I need to back them up, but I'm not sure how to do
that. Also, if I do need to back it up on a disc, can I use a CD-R or does
it have to be a CD-RW?

Thank you!

Normaly by updating Outlook you should not lose any contacts, callendar...
Anyway, it is a good idea to update the data so you are on the save side
when something goes wrong during the update.
- Close Outlook before doing the next steps
- go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USERNAME\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook
and copy all *.pst files to an other location. (I recommend any folder in
My Documents... you can backup on a CD... but to access the file later you
have to copy it from the CD to any location in My documents (you need wirte
rights on the file)... see steps below, how to open a pst-file)
- Update now your Outlook
- Check in your updated Outlook if all data is available in your updated
Outlook.

- If any reason you lost any data you can open the pst-file.
- Open Outlook and choose in menue: File - Open - Outlook Data File
- go to the location where you copied the file before the update and open
the file... now you can copy the missing data.
If you want to close the pst-file later... select the pst in the Outlook
Folder view and click right and choose Close....
