I tried contacting microsoft to no avail, so i figure this is the best
option. my university (SUNY Buffalo) gave all its incoming freshman (such as
I) a complementary MS Office 2003 Professional disc. This was back in August.
since then, i have had to do a few system restores on my laptop for various
reasoning, and i pruchased another laptop. Due to this, i assume that i have
used the product key past it's limit for online activation. I am assuming
that because of this, when i now try to us MS Word 2003, all options in each
task bar are grayed out, and i constantly get a message saying:
"this modification is not allowed because the document is locked."

i have tried everything i can think of to fix it, but nothing works. I am
assuming that since i can no longer activiate the product, that this is why i
am having trouble, which would mean my copy of MS Office is essentially
worthless now. Is there anything i can do to fix this? ALL answers would be
most greatly appreciated.

Have you tried activating (instead of just "assuming")? If online activation
doesn't work, you'll be given a phone number to call. You should still be
able to activate by phone.

If you were given a trial version then the only way to 'fix' the
problem you are encountering is to purchase the software.

Since you are a student you should qualify for the Student and
Teachers Edition which is around $140 or so.
