I really need to use me computer in word, but "This modification is not
allowed because the document is locked" keeps on coming up.
I think my sister has done this accidently, so she cannot help me.
Although i am pretty clever, i have been on this pc for hours now, and would
appreciciate small, unconsise answers.
Thanks

Hope this helps - I got it from the 2003 Help Files

If you see this message at the bottom of the application window when you try
to modify a document: "This modification is not allowed because the document
is locked," the document is protected with an editing restriction of No
changes (Read only) or Comments in Word 2003 (or a restriction of Comments in
Word 2002 and Word 2000). The document author used the Protect Document
features to restrict editing. Menu commands also might be unavailable,
depending on the permissions that were granted to you by the document author.

Note When you open a document that is protected by Information Rights
Management (IRM) in Word 2003, you might have permission to view the document
but not to change it. When you open the document, the Shared Workspace task
pane opens by default on the right side of the application window. In the
task pane, click View My Permissions to see your permissions.

I forgot to add - to unprotect your document in Word 2003
Go to Tools
Unprotect
the Task Pane will come up and you can unprotect the doc

Is it possible that Word hasn't been activate? If you don't activate, it
goes into limited functionality mode after 50 uses. Check Help - Activate
Product to see if this is the problem.

i cannot click on the button that says "unprotect" because i dont have one. I
cannot click on most buttons, too.

Since the document doesn't seem to be protected, either you have not yet
activated the product (try Help | Activate Product) or it is a trial version
that has expired.
