You need to turn on the underline feature instead of just trying to use the
underscore key from your keyboard. When you get to the end of your text, you
will need to use Ctrl+Shift+spacebar to extend the line out as far as you
want it to go. Be sure to turn off the underline at the end of your line.
Also, you'll want to make sure that under Format-Font-Underline Style you
don't have something like "words only selected." If you do, it will
underline only the words and not the spaces.
The correct way to ensure lines do not move is to create a simple one row
table and remove all borders except for the bottom border of the cell you
want to type in. An example is at:
Identification of a signature should go *under* the line; the real signature
should go on the line. But if you're reproducing a signed document and want
it to appear that the signature is on the line, just type the signature with
underlining, then finish out the line with an underlined tab (set a tab stop
in the appropriate location).
