How do I turn off global formatting changes

I have recently got Word 2003 at work and noticed that when I select a piece
of text and make it bold, the entire document turns bold. Similarly, when I
select a line of text to have a bullet, every line in my document gets
bullets. I do not have this problem on Word 2003 on my home PC and cannot
find anything under Tools/Options to turn this feature off. Can anyone help
please!
