Hi,

I have WinXP Pro setup in a stand-alone setting (not in a domain). I have
other users I want to be able to do all the regular user things, but not be
able to install software.

I can turn off permissions to the Add/Remove control panel, but that does
not block a program that comes with a self-installer.

How can I block users from installing s/w on my PC? .

I would be happy to do this either in the registry or via group policy. I
do want to retain the right for me to be able to install via my Admin
account without having to change permissions to do that.

What I am mostly concerned about is stuff that would be downloaded, so
blocking access to the floppy or CD drives is not going to solve the
problem.

TIA,

Kevin

Set their account type to "User" this will block them from most, if not
all, program installations.

The accounts are already setup as a user accounts without Admin priviliges.
I am not sure what they can't install from that, but I know from testing
that the account does allow for installing share-ware off the web even with
Add/Remove .cpl permissions set to deny.

I have tried some RTFM type things such as searching google,
experts-exchange and other places. I could not find a method that works and
that is why I wrote here. I would be happy to RTFM if you would let me know
where to find the section containing the information I am seeking.

From Help and Support - "User Accounts Overview"
<quote>
Limited account

The limited account is intended for someone who should be prohibited from
changing most computer settings and deleting important files. A user with a
limited account:

a.. Cannot install software or hardware, but can access programs that have
already been installed on the computer.
<endquote>

I've checked using a Limited User account on my XP Pro system, and
everything I tried to install was blocked. Double check that your users are
not somehow set as Power Users or that other rights have been given to them.
