I can open Outlook 2007 normally and it works fine. After a while Outlook
launches itself and I then have two identical programmes running albeit a
little slower. How can I prevent this?

It launches the same as the program aleady running.

It launches as a new Outlook window or just as a process?

Could you check Task Manager-> tab Processes and see how many processes of
outlook.exe are running?

You´re mixing up terms now; you mean 2 Outlook application windows and 1
outlook.exe process? The difference is kinda crucial in this post ;-)

Can you identify the actions you took before the second window opens and/or
repro the issue on demand?
Are you running in a multi monitor setup?
