How do I stop Outlook from closing Word after using email?

Every time I write or read an email, Outlook will close Word when I'm
finished. How can I stop this? Thanks.
 
Version of Outlook? Is word closed in task manager?

We use Office 2003. I have auto updates for Office and Windows.

Word is closed according to Task Manager.
