My deleted items folder deletes automatically every now and then, it's
driving me mad! I've taken off the auto archive etc and it still deletes the
whole lot every few days.

Are you on an Exchange server?
Autoarchive isn't related - is Outlook set to empty the deleted items folder
(tools, options, other)?
Note - deleted items is *not* a good place to store anything you need, ever.
Don't put your grandmother's heirloom china in the wastebasket, and don't
put things you may want to keep in the deleted items folder, either. :)

While the above advice is good, there should be a way to stop Outlook from emptying the folder without warning or permission. I too would like a solution to this problem. Any ideas out there?

That really depends on how they get deleted and what version of Outlook you
are using. AutoArchive is something you control just like having the Deleted
Items folder get emptied by closing Outlook. These are ALL settings YOU
control and are OFF by DEFAULT and DO warn you on deleting.

When you are in an Exchange organization your administrator might have set a
retention policy and configured Exchange to empty the Deleted Items folder
every x-days. Outlook has nothing to do with this and thus cannot warn you
about it. The solution then would be getting company policies get
communicated to you ;-)

Tips of the month:
-Properly back-up and restore your Outlook data
-Create an Office 2003 CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 1

I am on a stand-alone PC at home running Outlook 2003; I have the autoarchive
set for six months; I tried turning it off but that did not help. I don't
have the block checked to empty upon closing. Something strange is going on
here.

Does the same happen when you use Outlook in safe mode?
