This kmixer.sys is mentioned every other time I get a BSOD. Always a "STOP:
0x0000007e" error. Usually happens when I try to play something with audio,
but not every time. I've found the file in the drivers folder. What am I
supposed to do with it, if anything?

I don't understand. My symptom is a series of crashes with kmixer.sys
mentioned in the error message, but the article gives these as symptoms:
"When you run a DirectSound sample program that allocates hardware buffers,
you may not be able to allocate all of the buffers that the hardware
supports. When you are using a driver that supports the IPinCount interface,
the hardware buffer count should be updated, and this update is based on the
type of buffer that is being allocated."

Is not being able to allocate the buffers supposed to imply a crash? What
is a DirectSound sample program? Are Quicktime, WMP, Winamp, and Realone
DirectSound sample programs? These are the programs in which I'm
experiencing the relevant problem. I find now that the problem isn't just
with streaming audio. I can't play CDs or saved mp3s or non-streaming
Quicktime audio either.
