How do I stop auto conversion of numbers to a date?

I type in 9-5 and Excel automatically changes my entry to 9-May. I've tried
to stop it using Autoformat but it hasn't worked.

Format the cell as Text before entering any information into it.

Preceed your entry with an apostrophe or formate the cells as text.
