Delmonico

I have a computer with all sorts of problems including
spyware, worms, lost or corrupted dlls, etc. I want to
start afresh. It's running and XP upgrade from WIM98SE
which was an upgrade from WIN98 (which may even have been
upgraded from 95, I forget). I still have my upgrade xp,
98SE and 98 disks. How can I completely reformat my hard
drive and start over and still have my operating system
authorized? I really am tired of buyimg liscences for
computers' operating systems that I already bought once.
Thank You

Windows XP will need to be re-activated (authorized) within
thirty days. This usually is done on-line and is quick,
easy, and sort of auto-magic. Sometimes you will have to
make a toll-free call, but that works quite well also.
Use your Upgrade CD to boot, reformat, and reinstall.

Hello
Since you have the CD's this will be very easy.
Backup all needed files, disconnect everything but the Monitor, Keyboard &
Mouse.
You have several choices, Remove all the spyware, run a virus scan, then do
a repair install or just do a Clean Install.

Spyware Removal (free)

Virus Scan (free)
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
or
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9913

Repair Install (scroll down to Repair Install)
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

Clean Install
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/cleanxp.htm

Be sure to visit MS Windows update site, download the updates, this is for
your security and safety.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

The thing most people do not know is that after they buy a computer with
virus protection installed they have to go in and register and download the
updates and continue to update it or set it to auto update then after a
period of time the subscription will run out usually in 90-180 days at that
time they will have to purchase new protection either online or from a
retail store and at that time they will be able to update for a period of
365 days (1 year).

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

A little way after that it will ask where Windows is. Offer it the Win
ME CD in the drive (upgrade one will be fine) let it find it, and put
the XP one back when it asks for a CD at a Blue Screen
