How do I sort Word Index in numeric value sequence?

I am preparing a history book on WWII and am distressed to see military unit
designations sorted in alphabetic sequence in the Index (for example, the
101st Airborne Division appears before the 82nd Airborne Division). Is there
a way to have the index use the absolute numeric value of an index entry for
sorting purposes and then print the index characters in the appropriate
location?
 
You (or someone working with you) has told us this before. I can sympathise
but not, I'm afraid, offer any solution.
