How do I sort/print mailmerge in columns, not rows

I'm trying to sort a mailmerge onto labels that are in two columns. I need
the data to print in columns (ie 1st column, then 2nd column) instead of row
by row. How do I setup Word to do this?
 
If you data source is Access, or you have Access and you can import the
datasource into it, it has the ability to print labels in that fashion.

Otherwise, run the following macro on the datasource if it's a Word document

' Macro to assign numbers to data source so that it can be sorted to cause
labels to print down columns
