How do I set up outlook to read an pdf file

Hello, on one of our computers at work every attachment that is received is
listed as a word attachment. Pdf files are highlighted as a word attachment
even though the extension is .pdf

Change your PDF file type association to Acrobat Reader (or some other PDF
reader) in Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types.
