we use Word on a network and I would like to copy a template I use Normal.dot
and makee it a shared template so that my auto text would be available for a
number of workers. Any ideas if this can be done.

Do not ever try to share Normal.dot! Instead, save your AutoText entries in
a global template and put it in a shared folder. Set users' Workgroup
Templates (Tools | Options | File Locations) to point to that folder.

AutoText is stored in templates, in normal.dot by default. For a number of
reasons it is not usually good practice to simply copy normal.dot to a new
installation. See http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for
step-by-step instructions on moving / sharing / copying customizations
including AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, macros, etc.
