How do I set up a project calender?

I am trying to set up a spreadsheet that you can enter a task its start date
and target date and it would calculate the # of days and project a bar across
the calender on the right.

In principle you can do this but you would need to be careful if using
your dates to define the length of a rectangle superimposed on the
spreadsheet. This is because graphics are very easily moved and can
have problems sorting.

You may be better to use a purpose built application such as MS
project.
