How do I send the e-mails in my Outbox?

First of all, I am a FIRST-CLASS layman; therefore, my terminology,
etc.,probably will not be correct! I have Windows XP and use MS Outlook for
my e-mail program. My Server is AT&T. I work up a new e-mail and it
automatically goes into the Outbox. Then I hi-light one or all of the
outgoing e-mails and click on the Send/Receive in the Toolbar. Sometimes the
e-mail(s) will be sent and sometimes they will not be sent. I had about six
in the Outbook today and two did not go and when I opened them, the top bar
stated that that e-mail had not been sent. I kept trying to send by clicking
the Send/Receive on the upper bar and they just will not go. This happens
about 90% of the time to the e-mails I send. Please advise! Thank you.
 
Don't highlight or reopen the emails after you compose & press the Send
button--IN THE EMAIL itself. If you open the email, you have to press Send in
the email again before pressing Send/receive on the toolbar.
