I use Firefox and its mail program Thunderbird. How do I configure Word 2003
to allow me to send a document within Word?

You can't configure anything - Word uses some email features based on what
the default client is and some features require Outlook 2003. The easiest
way to know what works is to try the File, Send to menu options. Any that
fail require Outlook.

Word as Outlook's e-mail editor requires integration between those
Office components. Neither Firefox or Thunderbird are components of MS
Office so you don't get that integration. Best you could do is open
Word, create your message, and use the File -> Send menu to open
whatever is currently designated the default MAPI client (i.e.,
Thunderbird).
