How do I search for emails containing a specific phrase, e.g., "modified
report" and not simply retrieve all emails that contain either "modified" or
"report" anywhere in the text? (Outlook 2003). I've tried single quotes
(still retrieves components) & double quotes (no match)

Tools>Rules and Alerts>New Rule>Start from a blank rule>Next. Check "with
specific words in the body". Click "specific words" in the lower pane. In
the "Specify words or phrases..." box, enter "modified report" (without the
quotes) and click Add. Finish the rule with whatever other conditions or
actions you need.

Julie,
at the far right of the search area click the Options pull down arrow, and
select Advanced Find
the top box of the message tab is Search for the word(s):
you can use quoted searches here
