How do I save a word doc to a PDF file?

Get a copy of Acrobat (full version, not the reader) or one of the clone
equivalents. There's also an online service at the Adobe web site.
 
Do a web search for pdf995 - its a free download - not very big.
Install
then when in word, go to print, choose pdf995, not your printer

and there you have it

And works well enough provided you don't need the PDF for commercial
printing. Some of the freebie PDF apps have trouble with non-true-type fonts
and other issues that make the resulting files unacceptable for some
purposes.
