My old computer needs a complete chkdsk but I
have to run it from the Start menu.

Can someone tell me how to type this in, but
with all the detail to chkdsk the free space
too?

Please help, Frank

Go to Command Prompt (Start>All programs>Accessories>Command Prompt).

That will open a window with a command prompt. If you've ever done DOS, this
will be familiar.

Then type in chkdsk/? and it will give you all the parameters.

You can either run chkdsk from that window or you can go back to Start>Run
(assuming you have "run" enabled and visible). Type in chkdsk followed by
the parameters you want and hit enter.

Should work. I've been able to do chkdsk from Run but without any
parameters.

Thank you. I did this and the computer is
doing a long check now.

Does the computer save the results to an
"report file" for closer inspection?

Regards, Frank

Open EventViewer: Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter] and click on
"Application". In the "Source" column, look for the "Winlogon" item.
Double-click it and you should see the results of your Chkdsk.

Thanks, I did this. Also, since then many of
my desktop shortcuts dont work any more and I
get an error message "Windows cannot access
the specified device path or file. You may
not have permission to access the item". I
have tried suggestions elsewhere but to no
avail.

Help.

Then it would be smart - especially since you started out saying this
was an old computer - to download a diagnostic utility from the hard
drive mftr.'s website. Create bootable media (floppy or CD) and boot
with it. Do a thorough test of the hard drive. If the hard drive has
any physical errors, it's time to replace it. If the hard drive tests
fine but shows errors with the file system (which would mean Windows),
back up your data and first try a Repair Install. If the Repair Install
doesn't fix your issues, do a Clean Install of Windows.
