how do I retrieve a document that is encoded?

I backed-up a document and when I tried to look at it, it was encoded and I
can't it uncoded. Is there any way to turn off encoding? I am using
Microsoft Word 2002. I just want to get my documents back.
 
Where and how did you back it up?
