Hello all,

I have an unusual request (it's just for appearence purposes).

I want to rename my WINDOWS directory to Windows.

I assume this would cause no problems with programs or the system, as the
name is essentially the same, am I right in saying that?

I am using Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2.

Thanks in advance

Right click on WINDOWS in Explrorer and rename it...Folders arn't cas
sensitive...jim

That doesn't work in XP Pro, the option to rename the folder is not there,
and when clicking on the name to rename the folder nothing happens.

I am looking for a command line or a registry hack that will enable the
rename function for the WINDOWS folder.

Why don't you just do whatever you bought the computer for, and quit looking
at the directory structure?

Look, it may seem a pointless request, but there's no need for you all to
keep going on about ignoring it or something.

If you don't know how to help me with this request, then please do not
bother replying to the group.

I am just getting my computer in a state I want it to be in, if it is no
harm, why can't someone just tell me how to rename the bloody thing, rather
than reply with pointless statements.

I'm with you Sam - I have been trying to find out
how to change the folder name from WINDOWS2 to Windows
for ages - no joy to datee.

Regards, Stephen

Throughout your computer, there will be references to c:\windows2.. windows2
is your WORKING windows directory.. any attempt to rename it will render all
references to c:\windows2 inoperable, and not surprisingly, your Windows
installation will cease to function..

Hi, i think he meant changing the name from WINDOWS to Windows (the 2 just
being shorthand).

Perhaps a better choice for the OP might be to seek help from a Mental
Health professional. Obsessive/Compulsive disorders can routinely be
treated these days. Spending as much time and energy as the OP has in
obsessing over WINDOWS versus Windows certainly qualifies as something that
needs attention.

Yeah it's a terrible thing, on a par with CPRS, compulsive pointless reply
syndrome ;)

Only kidding, good point though, I think it's more a matter of choice, I am
just going to create a shortcut and hide the bloody WINDOWS folder now.

Hi Stephen,

You can't change the name of the Windows directory . . . I shouldn't
say can't. To change the name from Windows2 to Windows, requires that
you change every instance of Windows2 to Windows in the registry. What
Sam wants to do is simply change the case of the name. Windows is not
case sensitive, so his change would not require changes in the registry.

Sam, I am a neat-nick and like my computer to look a certain way. I
have use the BartPE disk for doing maintenance that Windows Explorer
won't let me do.

Hi there Drayton,
How do I use BartPE to simply rename my windows folder?

Thanks for your time

Hi Sam,

BartPE has a file manager. You can change the case there. Since
windows doesn't care about case, BartPE will let you make the change.
As to actually changing the name, ie. windows2 to windows, I don't
know if BartPE will let you do that. If it would, you would still have
to make all those changes in the registry that I mentioned earlier.

I've been using BartPE for a while now, and keep the disk in my
computer bag. I am waiting for a version that has USB support.

Thanks for the advice Joseph.
Luckily I found another method suggested by Marris in the General newsgroup.

Firstly you restart the computer with the Windows Xp CD in the drive.

You use the Windows Recovery option for the Windows XP CD startup.

Using Recovery console you type the following:
CD C:\
So that C:\WINDOWS becomes C:\

Now type:
ren WINDOWS win

Then type
ren win Windows

If you recieve the error "Access Denied", just type restart the computer and
go back into the Windows recovery using the Windows XP CD at start up. And
then again type:
CD C:\
Then type:
ren win Windows

Now restart the computer, if for some unknown reason you don't seem to reach
the login screen, just reboot the PC again, and everything will work fine.

This is quite a simple way of doing things, by renaming to win first, it
ensures that the lowercase will be recognised when renaming to Windows.

Thanks for everyone's advice and help.
To those who are interested in renaming the folder to Windows, remember to
backup all you needed files, it goes without saying that renaming the
windows directory is risky, so it's allways best to back everything up.

Thanks again all.
