Hello!
If you choose Repair, yes your files should still be there.
If you do a fresh install, no they will be gone. Some
Repair instructions ...
5. When the computer boots from the CD-ROM, it checks your
hardware and then prompts you to choose from the following
options.

*To set up Windows XP now, press Enter

*To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery
Console, press R.

*To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

6. Please press Enter.

7. Press the F8 key to agree the Licensing Agreement.

8. You will see your current Windows XP installation is
listed in a box and get the following options:

*To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

*To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without
repairing, press ESC.

NOTE: Press ESC will clean install Windows XP and all the
data will be lost.

9. Please press "R"

10. Then the setup program will repair Windows XP
automatically.

Before doing a complete reinstall, try just removing and adding back the
corrupted components. Go to Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
When Add or Remove Programs comes up, click the Add/Remove Windows
Components icon. Remove the check from the network components that you
want to reinstall, click Next and finish your way through the wizard,
reboot if prompted at the end. Then go back into Add/Remove Windows
Components, place a check back next to the network components and again
click Next and finish your way through the wizard.
